Alaska’s unparalleled landscapes and wildlife make it one of the most sought-after cruise destinations. However, with so many options available, it can be difficult to figure out which itinerary is right for you. Selecting the best route, ports to visit, and shore excursions will ensure that your Alaskan cruise is truly unforgettable. This guide simplifies the decision-making process, helping you navigate your options to make the most of your adventure. If you can spare the time, I highly recommend doing at least 3 days on land to get the full Alaska experience.

Choosing the Right Itinerary for Your Alaskan Adventure

Inside Passage Cruise
If you’re looking for a comprehensive Alaskan experience with calmer waters, I highly recommend the Northbound Vancouver to Anchorage itinerary. This cruise combines both the Gulf of Alaska and Inside Passage, offering a perfect balance of scenic cruising and the opportunity to explore Alaskan ports. Your journey starts with a slightly rougher first day as you sail out of Vancouver, but once you enter the Inside Passage, the waters become much calmer and the views become more breathtaking. Along the way, you’ll visit charming coastal towns like Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, while experiencing the stunning fjords and glaciers that make Alaska famous. This route offers an excellent mix of coastal beauty, wildlife sightings, and unique cultural experiences, all while providing smoother sailing as you continue north. It’s also more likely to include Glacier Bay as one of the scenic sailing days.

Alaska Cruise and Denali National Park Tour
This unforgettable cruisetour combines a breathtaking Alaska Inside Passage cruise with a land journey to Denali National Park. After exploring glaciers and coastal towns, you’ll travel inland to experience the vast wilderness of Denali, where you’ll have opportunities to see the majestic Denali Mountain and spot wildlife like moose and bears. This is the ultimate itinerary for those seeking both the beauty of the coast and the rugged landscapes of Alaska’s interior.

Ultimate Alaska Adventure Cruisetour
This all-encompassing cruisetour offers the best of Alaska, combining an incredible cruise through the Inside Passage with an immersive land tour through the state’s most iconic locations. After exploring glaciers, fjords, and coastal towns, you’ll journey into the heart of Alaska, with visits to Denali National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias, and the remote wilderness of the Yukon. Ideal for those seeking a truly transformative experience, this ultimate itinerary lets you experience Alaska’s stunning landscapes, wildlife, and rich history from every angle.

Colorful wooden houses along Ketchikan's picturesque waterfront offer a glimpse into Alaska's charm.

Ketchikan

Juneau
As Alaska’s capital, Juneau offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Visit Mendenhall Glacier, take the Mount Roberts Tramway for breathtaking views, and explore the local museums, galleries, and shops.

Train winding through lush green forest in Skagway, Alaska, offering a scenic travel experience.

Skagway
A town rich in history from the Klondike Gold Rush, Skagway offers visitors a chance to step back in time. Ride the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Seward
Seward is the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, where you’ll find glaciers, diverse marine life, and incredible wildlife. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Picturesque harbor with boats, mountains, and clear skies in Sitka, Alaska, near the water's edge.

Sitka
A beautiful town with Russian roots, Sitka offers a rich cultural experience. Visit landmarks like the Russian Bishop’s House and Totem Park to learn more about Alaska’s unique history.

Surrounded by majestic mountain views, Valdez is perfect for outdoor adventurers. Explore Columbia Glacier, go kayaking, or enjoy some of Alaska’s best fishing.

Homer
Known for its artistic community and stunning vistas, Homer is an excellent destination for art lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Enjoy panoramic views of Kachemak Bay and Kenai Peninsula, and explore the vibrant local arts scene.

Glacier Bay National Park: A Must-See Destination

Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is on many people’s Alaska “must see” list. Known for its dramatic glaciers and abundant wildlife, this park is one of the most awe-inspiring places in Alaska. UnCruise, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line offer itineraries that include Glacier Bay, but Viking, Silversea, and a few others also include it in some of their cruises. Sailing through Glacier Bay is subject to daily limits and by permit-only because it is a national park.

If your chosen cruise route doesn’t include Glacier Bay, you may still be able to do a land extension that includes it by booking a day trip on a small boat. (I personally found my time in College Fjord and Icy Straight Point more awe-inspiring than Glacier Bay – so I’d advise you not to stress about it!)

Unforgettable Shore Excursions

The best way to experience Alaska’s natural beauty and culture is through its shore excursions. Here are a few you won’t want to miss:

Majestic view of a whale's tail splashing through ocean waters under a clear sky.

Whale Watching Tour
Take a whale-watching excursion in Juneau or Icy Strait Point for the chance to see humpback whales, orcas, and other marine life up close.

Flightseeing Tours
Experience Alaska from above with a flightseeing tour over glaciers, mountains, and valleys. Popular areas for flightseeing include Denali and Misty Fjords, where the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Team of huskies pulling a sled in a snowy mountain landscape.

Dog Sledding Adventure
Experience the thrill of dog sledding on a glacier. It’s a unique and unforgettable way to explore Alaska’s icy terrain.

Salmon Fishing Expedition
Head to Ketchikan, the “Salmon Capital of the World,” for a fishing adventure. Try your hand at catching a prized salmon and learn about the region’s fishing traditions.

Top Cruise Line Recommendations for Alaskan Cruises

While Princess Cruises and Holland America offer some of the best Alaskan itineraries, I recommend the following cruise lines for their superior service, luxurious ships, and overall quality experience:

  • UnCruise: I highly recommend UnCruise for Alaska due to its intimate, small-ship experience that allows for deeper exploration of off-the-beaten-path locations. With a focus on adventure, guests can enjoy activities like kayaking, hiking, and wildlife spotting in remote areas. The personalized service and all-inclusive approach make it a perfect choice for travelers looking for a unique and immersive Alaskan adventure.
  • Viking: While Viking’s itineraries may not include as many ports as Princess or Holland America, the cruise experience is top-tier. Viking offers an intimate, refined experience with exceptional service and high-quality ships, perfect for those seeking a luxurious yet enriching cruise.
  • Silversea: For those seeking all-inclusive luxury, Silversea offers a premium experience with impeccable service, gourmet dining, and top-tier excursions. It’s the perfect choice for travelers who want an exclusive, indulgent Alaskan adventure.
  • Celebrity: Offering a great balance between luxury and affordability, Celebrity provides a premium cruise experience with stunning ships and outstanding service, all at a more accessible price point.
  • Royal Caribbean: Known for its lively, family-friendly atmosphere, Royal Caribbean is ideal for families or those seeking more onboard activities and entertainment. While their itineraries may not delve as deeply into remote Alaskan destinations, the service and onboard experience are top-notch.

Booking Your First Alaskan Cruise

For first-time Alaskan cruisers, I recommend starting with a 7-night Inside Passage cruise and a 2- or 3- day land extension. This is called a “Cruisetour” and it’s a classic itinerary that offers an excellent introduction to Alaska, visiting top highlights and providing a perfect balance of sightseeing, wildlife encounters, and scenic cruising.
