They can be tricky to activate and are sometimes data-only (though you can make calls over WiFi) – so only go this route if you are pretty tech savvy. I’ve found them to be a hit or miss as far as reception goes, but for affordability on extended trips, they’re a great option – especially if you have a dual-SIM phone.
