Travel Diaries: Switzerland & The Bernina Express!

Day 3: The Bernina Express & The Best Day Ever

We took the train from Milano Centrale to Tirano (which, thankfully, wasn’t delayed, despite the cargo train derailment earlier that morning) and then rode the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur.

The Alps had just gotten snow a couple weeks before, and it was an incredible experience to ride from sunny, green valleys up through the snow covered peaks. They also gave us Swiss tea and a cute little Bernina tin filled with chocolates. The train attendants both knew 7+ languages, and it was so interesting to learn about the Romansh language, and how they are trying to keep it alive, so very similar to Welsh. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Chur is such a lovely little town, and I would love to go back… or just move there. 🇨🇭 It was so cute and clean, and all of the people were so kind.

The hotel was right by the train station and totally perfect, complete with robes and slippers for the sauna, and chocolates left on each pillow.

The front desk had made us dinner reservations nearby at Hotel Stern, and it was probably my favorite dining experience ever. We were definitely the only people there who were not Swiss or German, and the kitchen kept sending little tasting plates out to “the Americans” according to our funny waitress. When we were leaving, she gave me a cute little goat stuffed animal and a hotel cookbook “to welcome us to Switzerland” – so sweet, and an experience I’ll always remember.
